| Our own Bill Butman - currently serving
our country and protecting our freedoms in Operation Iraqi Freedom, still
manages to win awards. As we all know, an army travels on its stomach.
There is no doubt in my mind that the airmen that are fed by SMS Butman

| When you first hear of the title of
this award, you may think of Mickey Mouse and all his friends at
Disney World. Actually, SMS Kenneth W. Disney was a food service
trainer at McGee-Tyson Air National Guard in Knoxville Tennessee. 87
other Air National Guard Units used to send their newest trainees to
SMS Disney for two weeks to complete most of their tasks in there
training records. He took great pride in putting out the best meals
possible. He believed in Food Service Excellence. Tragically, SMS
Disney died in a car accident in 1993.
Three years ago, the Air National Guard Bureau in conjunction with the Services Field Advisory Committee had voted to have the title of the annual Food Service Excellent Award changed to the Kenneth W. Disney Award. The SMS Kenneth Disney Awards Program has been established to promote excellence in guest service and meal quality and inspire high morale, motivation, mission support, and a professional image through pride and spirited competition. This trophy is an annual award based on the entire scope of an installation's food service program exhibiting excellence in management effectiveness, force readiness support, food quality, employee and customer relations, training and safety awareness. Achieving success in the Kenneth Disney competition is a reflection of pride, commitment, and motivation to be the best. During the third week in May, the National Restaurant Association and The Culinary Institute of America sponsors the awards presentation in Chicago IL. Four days of viewing Hotel and Restaurant exhibits featuring 2,000 exhibitors, representing more than 800 product categories. This years winners are the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard in Westfield, MA. The criteria is based on AF 1038, Food Service Evaluation Record. Last years winners set the record with the highest score ever with 756 points out of a possible 1000. This year the 104th Service Flight broke that record with 835 points. During the four day evaluation, the 104th Services Flight had already 17 people deployed on their AEF rotation and 14 members had just been Partial Mobilized four days prior. During this deployment phase the 103rd Fighter Wing, Conn. Air National Guard assisted by sending two of their Services members to help out. The award is presented at the Hennessy Awards Breakfast with a Special guest speaker. Last years presenter was the Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force. For a Cook to received such a prestige award and attend National Restaurant show is like a child seeing Disney World for their first time. William G. Butman III, SMS Services Superintendent
